Job Title: Passenger Assistant
Location: London
Pay Rate: £12-24 per hour
THE PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
HG Group is recruiting Passenger Assistants to support one of the councils in London in delivering safe, reliable, and consistent transportation for children, young people with special educational needs, and vulnerable adults. This includes working split shifts (typically morning and afternoon) during term time, supporting passengers during journeys to and from school or care facilities.
Passenger Assistants ensure the safety and well-being of service users during travel, working closely with drivers and, where applicable, Specialist Healthcare Passenger Assistants.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Safely escort and supervise vulnerable passengers during their journeys.
- Ensure passengers are seated securely and assist with wheelchair access using tail-lift equipment if necessary.
- Provide consistent support to promote routine and reduce anxiety for service users.
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with children, young people, parents/carers, and team members.
- Support passengers with behavioural, emotional, or physical needs during transit.
- Work flexibly to accommodate route changes or cancellations.
- Contribute to a positive and caring travel environment.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
For General Passenger Assistants:
- PATS (Passenger Assistant Training Scheme)
- Basic First Aid & Anaphylaxis (including EpiPen)
- Child Protection / Safeguarding Vulnerable Persons
- Disability Awareness
- Dealing with Challenging Behaviour (Positive Handling)
- Manual Handling
- Health & Safety – Incident & Accident Reporting
For Specialist Healthcare Passenger Assistants (Desirable but not essential for general routes):
- Emergency Medication Administration (e.g., Buccal Midazolam)
- Severe Epilepsy Care
- Suction Emergency Care
- Sign Language (BSL Certified)
- Physical Intervention Training
Additional Requirements:
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
- Excellent communication skills and a patient, supportive nature
- Flexibility and reliability to work on short notice and varied shift patterns
- Ability to work term-time only, in split shift patterns (e.g., morning and afternoon)
